Four Options for Creating Modular Planters

There are four basic options for a continuous run of custom commercial planters that each have their advantages, as is explained below.

Non-Bolted Butt-Joined Modular Planters

For less permanent applications where planters don’t need to be bolted together, the Non-Bolted Butt-Joined Planter can be used. This allows complete flexibility for future design modifications if the needs of the space should change.

When to use

• Level sub-base is available

• Smaller project

• You need the flexibility to move the planters in a different configuration 

• You need a watertight modular planter system, such as in interior applications 

• Design with any planter material; Fiberglass, Aluminum or COR-TEN

Bolted Butt-Joined Modular Planters

Bolted Butt-Joined Modular Planters are individual planters manufactured by our shop that are identical in size and shape as per your specifications. These planters have predrilled holes in the side of the planters near the top or rim wherever there is a joint. The hole placement helps installers level and align the planters at the project locations. We provide rubber feet to help with the leveling process.

When to use

• If there is a need to remove individual planters for future maintenance 

• Desire the look of individual planters

• Budget is a concern as this model costs less than the Open Trough Modular Planter model

• You need a watertight modular planter system, such as interior applications 

• Design is spec’d with marine-grade aluminum or COR-TEN weathering steel

Open Trough Modular Planters

Open Trough Modular Planters are a long continuous channel of planters. There are flanges or gussets below the fill-line that bolt together the planters. The flange-joined planters provide a tighter vertical joint. This modular design also provides a continuous open trough, so that you can space ornamental trees or other foliage more evenly over the entire run.

When to use

• You desire a continuous planter trough look with no divisions

• Typically used in permanent rooftop planter systems for long runs

• You need to space plants more equally across planter space

• You need to connect watering systems using the Ollie Plant Sipper Linkable Tanks

• Design is spec’d with marine-grade aluminum or COR-TEN weathering steel

Bottomless Retaining Edging Modular Planters

These modular planters are created with the same planter sub walls but are manufactured without a bottom so that the existing subbase of soil can be used. The planter walls are stabilized using gussets when taller planter heights are required.

When to use

• A large open planting bed is specified 

• Need to keep costs low. (Costs can be significantly less than a planter with a full base especially when planting a wide area).  

• The existing sub-base is suitable to grow plants or trees

• You need to create multiple terraces of foliage

Recent Modular Planter Project

Tishman Speyer’s project at one of their commercial buildings, Rockefeller Center in New York, is a great example of properly utilizing modular planter design. Tishman Speyer used the Bolted Butt-Joined Planter Model to flank a seating area on two of the building’s terraces.

As explained above, this modular planter model uses individual planters installed next to each other. These planters are watertight but have bolts about two inches below the planter rim to keep the planters from moving.
