Preliminary Objectives:
The project team sought to create a collection of commercial planters that would support large interior plant installations while complementing the scale and modern aesthetic of Music City Center.
To establish a consistent visual experience throughout the convention center, the design called for planter installations adjacent to the escalators on three floors, creating familiar moments of greenery at key transition points.
The planters also needed to:
Enhance the visitor experience through interior greenery
Accommodate large tropical plant material
Maintain a clean architectural appearance
Allow flexibility for future space planning
Perform reliably in a busy public environment
Because the planters would be installed indoors, drainage, maintenance requirements, and floor protection also needed to be carefully considered.
Custom Solution:
PureModern fabricated a collection of custom aluminum planters in multiple sizes and configurations.
The project included:
Tower Planters
20" x 20" x 36"
18" x 18" x 40"
Rectangular Planters
36" x 16" x 32"
The collection included both stationary and mobile planter configurations to support different operational requirements throughout the facility.
All planters were fabricated from:
0.125" powder-coated 5052 marine-grade aluminum
Pewter powder coat finish
Watertight construction
No drainage openings
Full perimeter top lip with return
The result is a cohesive planter collection that supports a variety of plant types while maintaining a consistent visual language throughout the space.
Project Success:
The completed planter installation helps create a more cohesive experience as visitors move throughout Music City Center.
By repeating the same planter forms and finishes adjacent to the escalators on three levels, the design establishes familiar moments of greenery as visitors travel between floors, creating continuity throughout the convention center.
The pewter powder-coated finish was intentionally understated, allowing the surrounding architecture to remain the focal point. Set against expansive glass walls, warm wood ceilings, and nature-inspired carpeting, the planters complement the abundant natural light and material palette, making the interior landscaping feel integral to the architecture rather than an afterthought.
Together, the planters help define key transition spaces, introduce biophilic elements into the interior, and create welcoming focal points within the convention center's large open public areas.
How Interior Landscaping Supports Biophilic Design
Incorporating greenery into commercial interiors has become an important component of modern workplace, hospitality, and public-space design.
Interior landscaping is one of the most effective ways to bring biophilic design principles into large commercial buildings. By integrating greenery into circulation areas, gathering spaces, and naturally light-filled interiors, project teams can create environments that feel more welcoming, soften the scale of expansive public spaces, and strengthen the connection between architecture and nature.
At Music City Center, the repeated planter installations adjacent to the escalators on three levels help carry those principles throughout the building. The lush tropical plantings, combined with abundant natural light and a warm material palette, create a more inviting experience as visitors move through the convention center.
The planters contribute:
Enhanced visitor experience
Visual softness within large interior volumes
Connections to nature
Improved spatial interest
Flexible interior landscaping opportunities
Balancing Mobility and Stability
Expert Insights: Lessons from This Interior Landscaping Project
Interior Planters Have Different Requirements Than Exterior Planters: Drainage, flooring protection, maintenance access, and water management become critical design considerations for interior installations.
Concealed Mobility Requires Early Planning: Hidden caster systems can provide operational flexibility while maintaining a clean aesthetic, but they often require additional engineering and coordination.
Tall Planters Require Stability Considerations: When designing large tower planters for public spaces, ballast and structural reinforcement should be considered early in the design process.
Planters Support More Than Plant Material: In many interior environments, planters help shape the visitor experience, reinforce architectural themes, and support broader biophilic design goals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why use aluminum planters for interior commercial projects?
Aluminum delivers durability, clean architectural lines, and long-term performance while remaining lightweight compared to many alternative materials.
What are concealed caster planters?
Concealed caster planters incorporate mobility systems that are hidden from view, allowing planters to be moved without exposing wheels or hardware.
Why are ballast materials used in tall planters?
Ballast helps lower the planter's center of gravity, reducing tipping risk and improving stability.
Do interior planters always require drainage?
Not always. Many interior commercial installations utilize watertight planters to protect flooring and simplify maintenance.
