Preliminary Objectives:

The objective was to incorporate commercial-grade planter systems that would help add interest and make the terrace and entrance feel more welcoming while complementing The Benedict’s warm, mountain-town setting.

The planters needed to:

  • Support outdoor gathering and resident amenity areas

  • Add greenery and visual warmth at the terrace and entry

  • Complement the building’s brick, metal, and natural surroundings

  • Provide the weathered appearance of rusted steel without the added weight or runoff considerations of natural weathering steel

  • Perform reliably in an outdoor environment

  • Accommodate a mix of linear and compact planting conditions

Because the planters would be located in prominent resident-facing areas, the finished system needed to balance architectural appearance, long-term durability, and practical commercial performance.

Custom Solution:

PureModern fabricated a coordinated collection of custom commercial faux rust aluminum planters for The Benedict’s terrace and entrance.

The planter system included:

  • Six rectangular planters: 84"L x 30"W x 30"H

  • One modular rectangular planter: 168"L x 30"W x 30"H

  • Three square planters: 24"L x 24"W x 24"H

All planters were fabricated from 0.125" powder-coated 5052 marine-grade aluminum and finished in faux rust. Each planter included integrated drainage and a 1-1/2" top lip with a 1" return.

Project Success:

For The Benedict in Glenwood Springs, PureModern fabricated custom faux-rust aluminum planters for the terrace and building entrance. The coordinated collection of rectangular, modular, and square planter forms adds warmth and greenery to resident-facing outdoor spaces while delivering lightweight durability and finish consistency.

Why Faux Rust Aluminum Was a Strong Fit

The Benedict’s exterior combines brick, metal detailing, mountain views, and outdoor gathering areas. The faux rust finish helped introduce a warm, weathered appearance that complements those materials without requiring natural weathering steel.

For multifamily, senior living, hospitality, and rooftop amenity projects, faux rust aluminum can be a strong option when teams want:

  • The visual character of weathering steel

  • A lighter-weight planter material

  • Powder-coated finish consistency

  • Reduced concern about runoff or staining associated with naturally oxidizing steel

  • Custom planter dimensions and configurations

  • Commercial-grade durability for outdoor use

Supporting Resident Amenity and Entry Spaces

In multifamily and senior living communities, outdoor spaces are part of the resident experience. Planters can help make terraces, patios, courtyards, and building entrances feel more inviting while adding greenery, defining gathering areas, and softening hardscape conditions.

At The Benedict, the custom planter system supports this broader goal by adding interest and making the building’s terrace and entrance more welcoming.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between faux rust aluminum planters and Cor-Ten steel planters?

Faux rust aluminum planters use a powder-coated finish to recreate the weathered appearance of rusted steel. Unlike naturally weathering steel, aluminum does not develop an oxidized rust patina or produce iron-oxide runoff. Aluminum also offers a lighter-weight alternative, which can be beneficial for commercial terraces and other projects where planter weight is a consideration.

Can commercial aluminum planters be customized for different outdoor spaces?

Yes. PureModern fabricates custom aluminum planters in different sizes, shapes, configurations, and finishes to accommodate project-specific design requirements. At The Benedict, the coordinated system included rectangular, modular rectangular, and square planters for the building's terrace and entrance.
