The Zig Zag Stool was designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1934 as en expression of the Dutch Modernist Design Movement "De Stijl," and is now included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.

Made of 4 rectangular sections of natural hardwood, intricatedly dovetailed and bonded together, Rietveld originally wanted to create the piece out of one solid piece of material. A statement of modernist seating, the Zig Zag Stool expresses the cantilever principle in clear form.
