What Wedding Gift Are You Giving?

Posted on June 18, 2015

Three ways to help your friends increase their chances of having a long and happy marriage.

Whether you’re a member of a wedding party or just an invited guest, you might ask yourself: How do I help my friends enjoy a long and happy marriage?

There are a few things you can do that may have a positive effect on the chances of a longer lasting marriage, according to a research study by two Emory University economics professors who surveyed over 3,000 individuals in the United States last summer with questions about money and marriage. *

Based on the results, here are a few interesting factors that we at PureModern thought were helpful.

  1. Go to the wedding. If more than 51 individuals attend the wedding, the newlywed couple has at least a 69% chance of staying together. If you can't attend the wedding, consider a gift from PureModern.
  2. Encourage the couple to plan a wedding that is within their financial means. If a couple is together for 3 or more years before getting married, they are 39% less likely to divorce. A good time to save before spending. In addition, if a couple spends $20K or more on their wedding they are 46% more likely to divorce. This statistic may reflect the result of debt stress caused by borrowing money for a fancy wedding, not the best first step.
  3. Help fund their honeymoon.  A couple is 41% less likely to divorce if they go on a honeymoon.

So, choose to give your time, a little advice, and possibly some of your hard earned dollars to help ensure your friends will be together long into their golden years.
